Verse 20

स्तन्यात्तपूतनाप्राणः पूतनाक्रोशकारकः ।विन्यस्तरक्षागोधूलिर् यशोदाकरलालितः॥

100 stanyāttapūtanāprāṇaḥ

who with her milk drew out Pūtanā's life-breath

As Kṛṣṇa suckles, he draws out Pūtanā's very life-breath along with the poisoned milk; the enormous demoness shrieks as her life departs.

101 pūtanākrośakārakaḥ

who made Pūtanā shriek

Pūtanā's dying scream is so loud it shakes the sky; pregnant women of Gokula miscarry in fright; her true terrible form is revealed as she dies.

102 vinyastarakṣāgodhūliḥ

upon whom protective cow-dust was applied

After the Pūtanā episode, Yaśodā applies protective dust from cow-hooves on the baby's body; the cowherd-dust serves as a ritual amulet of protection.

103 yaśodākaralālitaḥ

fondled by Yaśodā's hands

Yaśodā cradles, rocks, nurses, and strokes the infant; the tactile love-play of the mother for the child is one of the Bhāgavata's central devotional images.
